Analysis of surname variations - Scotland
My father and step-mother spent many days identifying the variations in the family surnames as they appear in the official Scottish registers. They had a target list of forty one known or possible names.
The actual occurrences are as shown in the following tables. Although a surname appears in one of the tables it does not mean that it occurs in one of the Scottish trees. In addition, a few members of the English branches who were living in Scotland may be included in the later figures.
There was a greater variation in the surnames for births than for marriages and deaths.
I have also found analyses that they undertook of variants of the surname in the Scottish censuses from 1841 to 1891. This is included at the end of the page. I have created the data for 1901 from the copies that were made of the index entries; there was no analysis for that year. The data for 1911 and 1921 are from a new search of the census indecies on scotlandspeople.gov.uk in 2026, but only against the names that had occured in previous censuses.
