Fife Branch

This page sets out information that we have found about the Fife branch of Fairholm in Scotland.

So far, we have 40 people on this tree.

The head of this tree is James Fairholm / Farm who married Cristen / Christian Aitken / Aitken some time around 1748.

John could be the son of William and Mary (Drummond) (Firth of Forth branch) or of William & Elizabeth (Clatchie).  There may be un-indexed possibilities too.  Cristen / Christian was probably born in Kinghorn in 1724 to Robert Aitken and Christian Ovenstone.  There is no obvious marriage for her there or elsewhere to James.

James and Cristen had one son and five daughters - three of whom were named Cristen or Christian.  I assume that the first two of these daughters with the same name died young.  The third one may have married Alexander Sim.

There are only descendants for their son - George (born 1754).  He married Jean Rymer.  His great-grandson David died of yellow fever in 1896 in Rio de Janeiro, whilst serving as the 2nd engineer on the SS Ripon City.  He seems to be the last of the male line, but he was survived by one of his two daughters - Margaret Carmichael Forbes Fairholm.

Kinghorn & Kirkcaldy

Initially, the family lived at Kinghorn - on the opposite side of the Firth of Forth to Edinburgh.  By 1855 the family had moved to Kirkcaldy. At the time, Kinghorn was a small village, with a small harbour.  Following the construction of the railway bridge over the Firth of Forth the village became a holiday destination.  Kirkcaldy is a town just to the north east of Kinghorn.  It is known for being the home of Nairn floor coverings.  The company that produces them was established in 1847 and became the world's largest producer of linoleum in the mid-1800s.
