A William Fairholm joined the Royal Marines in 1862 at Woolwich. He was 24 (so born circa 1838) and a basket maker. His place of birth is stated as Wilford, Nottinghamshire. He was discharged from the marines in 1868.
He might be the William Fairholme who was a naval pensioner on his death certificate in 1911 and who married Fanny Weatley in 1865, but he was born at Gedling circa 1839 rather than Wilford. His father was stated as being John on the marriage certificate.
Also, he might be:
A. the son of John Fairholm and Mary Ann (Parker), but he was born at Sheffield circa 1840 according to the 1851 census (but there is no match in the index of baptisms for Sheffield)
or
B. the son of Hannah Fairholme (who later married William Norman) born in 1838, but he was probably born at Carlton (although baptised at Thurgaton). However, this William was living at Wilford in 1851 with his mother, step-father (William Norman) and his half-sisters. This could just be a coincidence.
There were ten William Fairholm or Fairholme or Fearholm or Fearholme births between 1832 and 1843 in parish registers and or censuses, but most can be ruled out of because their later lives can be tracked.
